Book Description: Excerpt from Six Years in Bolivia: The Adventures of a Mining Engineer I was a young mining engineer, recently appointed to the post of assistant manager of a tin mine in Bolivia, to which South American republic I was bound, when I sailed from New York one brilliant day in early August. The trip down the coast to Colon was uneventful, except for a gale which struck us off Cape Hatteras, and caused our round-bottomed boat to roll and pitch to an extent which rendered unhappy - not to say miserable - most of the passengers on board, the greater number of whom were employees of the Panama Construction Company, either returning to the Isthmus on the expiry of their leave, or going out there for the first time. On the eighth day we landed at the palm-fringed port of Colon, to learn that the last train for Panama had left. Book Description: Excerpt from The Native Tribes of Eastern Bolivia and Western Matto Grosso In addition to the multiplicity of tribes, the varying lengths of the period of White contact with these peoples should make eastern Bolivia a land of promise for anthropological studies in accultura tion. Some of the Indians came in touch with Spaniards during the first years of the conquest; many were subjected for more than 70 years to Jesuit rule and influence; some tribes did not have any contact with the Whites until the rubber boom; others even main tain their independence today and are among the few natives of South America who still live as they did before the arrival of the Whites. In some cases, certain individuals in a tribe have remained culturally unaffected by European customs while some families have been civilized for 2 centuries or longer. The region, therefore, offers an excellent opportunity for a study of culture change. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Description: Excerpt from Three Asses in Bolivia Happy the criminal booked for execution beside me booked for a voyage. Embarked, the boredom of all Time descends upon me; and I count the minutes till dry land appears. Nothing worse. Perhaps the worse might be better; it would at least be something to do. But at this a Half who certainly is not better' on the sea cries out at me in fury, Brute! If you only knew your luck! And she does know it, alas! None more surely; the reflections on the Sea of Glass will probably be too much for her. It was then, with deep foreboding on both sides, that we took ship at Liverpool - perhaps its initial was O and perhaps it was not and awaited the chastisement 'of Fate. Far kinder was she, however, than we had dreamed to be possible. Here was November, but no November storms; the Irish Channel and the Bay, but both were calm as a bowl of milk. With blazing sun, crisp air and hardly a ripple on the sea we steamed for three days as though on an inland river: even the Half remained immune; and we were able in peace to walk the ship and see what of good and ill she had inherited from Eve. Book Description: Excerpt from Uruguayans of to-Day Uruguayans OF to-day is the seventh book in the series planned by The Hispanic Society of America to make better known to the English-speaking world the representative living men of Hispanic America. The two hundred or more persons whose biographies are collected in this volume may be taken as fairly representative of Uruguay. They are drawn from all parts of the country and from all walks of life although, as is common in Latin coun tries, where every one feels the pull of the capital, there is a disproportionate number of residents of the seat of govern ment and what may seem an excessive number of members of the two learned professions, medicine and the law. This will necessarily be true of a country in which every one aspires to have at least a residence in the capital, and in which the way to the high places in government. Hispanic American Bibliographies

Book Description: Excerpt from Hispanic American Bibliographies: Including Collective Biographies, Histories of Literature and Selected General Works It is the compiler's intention to publish from time to time in the hispanic american historical review supplementary lists of bio bibliographical contributions to include current publications and also those that may not have been recorded in the present list. However, in this note to the special reprint edition it seems desirable to note the more important titles that have accumulated since the last part of the list was sent to the printer. By a regrettable oversight, Dr. Charles Carroll Marden's Notes for a bibliography of American Spanish (studies in honor of A. Marshall Elliott, Baltimore, Johns Hopkins press, 1911, p. 267 - 292) was omitted. This work, while modestly denominated Notes by the scholarly author, is in reality a comprehensive repertory of the literature of the subject prepared by one who is himself a specialist in the field. Dr. Marden is preparing a second edition in which he will incorporate the numerous contributions to the literature of the subject which have appeared Since 1911. Of the series of Hispanic American biographical repertories prepared by William Belmont Parker under the auspices of the Hispanic Society of America, the following are to be noted in addition to the two included in the list: Bolivians of to-day, New York, 1920 (xiv, 319 p.) Chileans of to-day, New York, 1920 (xix, 633 p.) Paraguayans of to-day, New York, 1920 (xv, 315 Peruvians of to-day, Lima, 1919 (xix, 616 This series of works forms a rather comprehensive and exceedingly valuable Who's Who of Hispanic America.
